Independency!

Give us a country where we each can seek and fulfill our destiny, as we see fit. Give us a country where our rights are issued not from pen of a king, but from the hand of God. Give us a country where we loan the smallest portion of these rights to the State for proscribed exercise. Give us a country where charity towards our fellow man comes freely from our hearts inspired by God, and not coerced from our pockets through threats by the State. Almighty God, if You bless us with such a country, we shall preserve it forever to the glory of Your Almighty Righteousness.

Bill Gates, Red China Doll.

Bill Gates has pooh-poohed concerns about internet censorship in Red China (yes, we still think that way), undercutting Secretary of State Clinton calls for greater freedom of expression there and Google's claims that Red Chinese operatives have conducted cyber espionage against its employees. Gates claimed that internet censorship in Red China is "limited", comparable to internet restrictions that exist in other countries, and easy to bypass. "[And] so you've got to decide: Do you want to obey the laws of the countries you're in, or not?" said Mr. Gates. Yes, Mr. Gates you certainly have asked the right question. Alas, throw another industrialist on the Totalitarian Collaborator Pile.

A Pavlovian Response.

On the Cigar Afficionado forums we recently read of a comrade, enjoying a Hoya de Monterey in Maine's great outdoors, confronted by some indignant dowagers who claimed that the odor of his cigar had wrecked their soiree some twenty yards away. Our friend went to great lengths in hydrodynamical and micro-climatical analysis to determine that in no way could the aroma of his stogie have reached the ladies in perceptible concentrations. To which we replied:

"The actions by the Ladies of Disapproval had nothing to do with any real olfactory sensation. They saw you smoking. They have been trained by the Mass Culture, much like Pavlov's dogs, to associate the visual cue of cigar smoking with disgusting smells, and so their brain invented a reaction. You should have asked them to play a game of solitare, waited for the Queen of Diamonds to appear, and reprogrammed them.

"In these times with so few predilections for which the State permits its citizens to possess reservations that when one comes along, such as cigar smoking, where the State actually sanctions disapproval you can expect persecution with a ferocity not unlike the burning of witches."

Another State-sanctioned persecution? Perhaps consider the previous post...
An Appeal to Heaven.

Recently, we have been reacquainted ourselves for the joys of hunting and the shooting sports. In the course our adventures we have also rediscovered the enormous separation between the stratum of our society that enjoy and cherish their rights to firearms possession and that which regard these rights as tasteless, immoral, and threatening; something to be suppressed for the good of all.

As our society falls deeper under the spell of lawyers, ersatz TV-psychologists, behaviorists, and social engineers, we fear the pressure to solve our "problems" by racheting up gun control laws will become unstoppable. It certainly is a far easier to do so than to address the deeper problems of pandemic personal disfunction and the enabling milieu.

Whither Human Spaceflight?

The Augustine Committee has released its report on the future of the United States' manned space program, concluding that either we adopt more ambitious goals for risking human life, or abandon the effort. In, particular: "the Committe concluded that the ultimate goal of exploration is to chart a path for human expansion into the solar system". We concur. We have considered what ultimate fate awaits human freedoms and democracy in a world with an exploding population, a diminishing supply of material and spiritual sustenance, and a metastasizing theocratic movement of intolerance and hatred for Western civilization. It is not a sanguine forecast. We believe it is no coincidence that the political revolution that resulted in the most supreme expression of human liberty occurred in a New World, where the principal challenge was to carve a free society out of a wilderness. When this experiment was attempted in the Old World, with its centuries-old social and economic castes, it degenerated into score-settling masquerading as "social justice". Islamofacism is the most dangerous modern variant now threatening civilization, while the infatuation with statism in our country is a less overtly murderous but no less noxious trend. So let us say farewell, sail to Mars, plant Old Glory, and build a Newer World.

Freedoms Continue to Erode.

Los Angeles County has now banned outdoor smoking, and New York City is considering a similar ordinance. Any claims of collateral damage to innocent bystanders from outdoor second-hand smoke is laughable. This is pure bullying by the Aesthetic Elites.

The Gathering Storm.

The President has declared that the "defining struggle" for America's youth is...health care reform. Not delusions such as defending freedom and supporting our friends in the world who cherish freedom as well.

The President has now reneged on missile defense agreements with Poland and the Czech Republic, embarrassing their pro-NATO governments, and making them second-class citizens of the Atlantic Alliance. It also raises the specter of a Russian "sphere of influence" reclaiming control over liberated Eastern Europe. This is done with the hope of pleasing the Russians so they may be more cooperative on stopping Iran's nuclearization. Fat chance for that.

David Frum summarizes the Pollyanna foreign policy of the Administration in The Week magazine, and it's quite discouraging.

Tell'em Stan 'n Edie!

In recognition of the Michigan House joining the ranks of the bullies by passing a bill to ban smoking in bars and restaurants, we offer this Muriel Cigar commercial from '65. You know, when Americans still had freedom of choice.

Science Sans Politics.

The Administration is touting big savings in health care by adopting universal electronic record-keeping. Two pro-Obama doctors have looked at the performance of such systems and have concluded otherwise.

Perhaps the President should confine policy decisions "based only on scientific merit" for issues with no perceptible moral dimension, such as medical record-keeping. Nat Hentoff reminds us that the President may have political or ideological investments in issues of life and death.

Just Plain Evil.

Robert Mugabe, leader for life of Zimbabwe, celebrated his 85th birthday on the backs of his fellow countrymen, the New York Times reports. The accomplishments of his career are impressive: he squandered international good will and any chance of racial accord by race-baiting and expropriation of land owners, through three decades of corruption and incompetence he has destroyed the country's economy, starvation pervades Zimbabwe, and the level of violence and terror he has employed to prop up his regime would have embarrassed the most ruthless apartheid goon.

Yet the international community does nothing, indeed is nearly silent on the suffering of Zimbabwe. Why? It's baffling that civil and human rights organizations, particularly African-American groups, have assumed such a low profile on this outrage.

Good News for Michigan Cigar Aficionados.

The Michigan Legislature failed to enact a total ban on smoking in bars, restaurants, cigar bars, and similar commercial private property. This legislation is now dead until the next Legislature is in session.
The organization Cigar Rights of America has been recently formed to help cigar smokers fight the creeping fascism of smoking bans and excessive tobacco taxes.

So Be It.

Tom Brokaw chastised Mr. Obama for continuing to smoke cigarettes. We say: hike up your skirt Mrs. Brokaw, and mind your own business. If the man wants/needs a smoke - and he is an adult - then he is free to puff away. Yes, there are serious health risks, and it's not our choice but his (perhaps we'll encourage him to abandon the coffin nails with a box of Punch Rare Corojos).

Fool's Gold.

The 29th Olympiad in Beijing is drawing to a close. It's been a great success for the PRC, with the distractions of sports, celebrity, money, with a slick campaign to portray China with a Disney World like tidiness. The concerns for air pollution and violence by a deranged individual were the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect propaganda campaign. Cheery memories of the Beijing Olympics will in be in dissonance with the behavior of China's authoritarian regime, complete with brutal political and religous persecution and agressive regional ambitions. We will all no doubt find the happy Olympics image of China preferable to believe.

Liberal Fascism.

Jonah Goldberg's book, Liberal Fascism, has been ridiciculed and denounced by the literary elites. Perhaps some of the outrage over his book is because he's on to something? John Fund discusses a few recent cases of Liberal Fascism : the strongarm tactics by the Michigan-based group BAMN ("By Any Means Necessary") to sabotage petition drives for ballot referenda on race-neutral hiring practices in Arizona and Missouri, and similar thuggery that faced those who dared to circulate a petition in Michigan to recall State House Speaker Andy Dillion.

Memorial Day, 2008.

...that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion... - A. Lincoln

It is very easy us on the homefront to forget the mortal threat that threatens the civilized world, and grim task of our forces that defend us. Please find time today to say thank you to our vets, and pledge to help our soldiers and their families. An excellent organization that provides such assistance is OperationHomeFront.net. Cough up a few bucks and do your part.

The Equality of Misery.

Paul Krugman is the Sad Sack of the New York Times' opinion page. In one of his recent columns he laments the American expression of freedom in on-demand personal transportation. He tells us now the Great Reckoning has arrived for such audacious behavioir. He yearns for a more European style of living for Americans: the citizenry concentrated in cities, where cars are nearly extinct and trains and buses are the principal modes of travel for the citizenry. Quoth Paul: "I have seen the future and it works...if we’re heading for a prolonged era of scarce, expensive oil, Americans will face increasingly strong incentives to start living like Europeans — maybe not today, and maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of our lives." Do the citizens ever leave their ghettos and see Yellowstone? Perhaps with permission from Commisariat for Transportation? But is it really necessary? Can't they just take the virtual tour in 3D-HDTV?

It's a pathetic vision that Sad Sack has for America as "Oceania", and it's very telling about how the Dystopians like Krugman and the Obamaniacs view America: so much unessential and antiquated expressions of personal liberty that lead to social and economic inefficiencies and threaten the Equality of Life. The Hard-Core Dystopians believe we have approached the limits of upward development of our society; we must now face that fact and manage society to create an equality of joy and misery among the citizenry...with more misery than joy as time passes. So stop grieving for long-gone freedoms and pass the Soylent Green and turn on the Obama Worship Hour.

Perhaps we should solve the problems of fueling personal transportation without restricting it. We're not sure that the Dystopians would like such an outcome, because they either don't recognize or accept how the American expression of life is different from that of the Old World.

The phrase "I have seen the future, and it works" was first uttered by Lincoln Steffens, an American journalist and an enthusiast for the Bolshevik Revolution, upon his return from the Soviet Union in 1921. Paul Krugman has brought this statement back from the dead, hoping for a different outcome. Let the dead rest, Paul.

Ban Popcorn Now!

We must stop the scourge of "yellow-lung" caused by the selfish demand for buttered popcorn in bars, restaurants, theatres, and other public places. Do it for the children!

The Assault on Freedom - the Michigan Front.

The Nonsmoking Hordes of Michigan are now pushing for a complete ban on smoking in most businesses. The principal targets would be restaurants and bars, with mercy granted toward tobacconists and cigar bars...for now.
We believe there is a whopper being told as part of this campaign, namely the suggestion that some 1800 Michiganders die each year from exposure to second-hand smoke. This is more than the yearly death toll in motor vehicle accidents in the state. There is likely an imaginative use of statistics is involved in this claim; the level of risk from second-hand smoke (or environmental tobacco smoke, ETS) has been claimed to be significant in some studies, and almost negligible in others. There are also other mitigating factors, such as proper ventilation, that are not considered by the pro-ban forces. Moreover, other occupational hazards involved in restaurants and bars are taken for granted, such as prolonged exposure to burning oils and liquids, grill smoke and aerosols, cutting tools, etc. How many grillcooks lives may have been cut short because of our love for a charburger?
There are many businesses that have voluntarily become smoke-free. Fine - it is the proprietor's rights to do so, and if the marketplace supports their stand, so be it. But there is no inherent right for a nonsmoker to demand that every proprietor provide an entirely smoke free environment. Nonsmokers do have a legitimate recourse to this insult to their sensibilities: refuse to patronize such unelightented establishments. And we'll celebrate your freedom of choice as you walk on by with the ignition of a fine premium cigar.
